Makers Carvera Spoil ðïļ Board - Levelled Up ð
Finally, after so many weeks, the hobbyist CNC from Makera (www.makera.com) did arrive. WHAT A JOY! ððĪŠ
Having a bazillion of projects in mind, we need to get it started properly right away. But first of all an ode to the Carvera: It is a nice, well thought machine. Compared to regular CNC mills it is a toy, yes, but to start the CNC milling journey it is a good machine for educational purposes. Also, having a 4th axis gives some possibilities other machines won't.
I did compare the Carvera to the Samurai (samuraimachinetools.com) and the Pocket NC (www.pentamachine.com) but found the Carvera being the more versatile product and more suitable to my needs.
The machine is pretty robust (weighing approx 60 kg) and comes with a lot of bits, and other utilities to get started right away.
One thing catching my eye though are the spoil boards as they are just x by x softwood boards. They do not have any holes in them so using the fixtures to will give you a hard time especially when your stock is rather small and you need a waste board underneath. But wait! We have a CNC now so levelling up the provided spoil boards should be no big deal.
Actually, larger spoil boards with pre-drilled holes can be bought at the Makera shop ($ 20) but why not taking care of that matter yourself ðŠ
Creating the model in Fusion 360 went pretty well and after some tests I felt confident enough to spoil one of the provided spoil boards ðķ
As you see the results are pretty good (see above ð). I did run a second pass after manually smoothing some leftovers.
I'm attaching the .STEP model here if you want to do this as well:
